Education

The relationship between dance and music is one of the most important elements that HODC explores in its work. It also forms the foundations on which the company approaches its educational work with musicality being a prime focus during sessions.

Henri Oguike Dance Company offers a wide range of educational activities including repertoire and creative workshops, choreographic residencies, lecture demonstrations and master classes. Participants can expect to engage in an experience that is both challenging and enjoyable.

Workshops
HODC's workshops are an excellent opportunity for dance practitioners and those studying dance to experience first hand the work of Henri Oguike Dance Company. This year, the Company will be offering two types of workshops Repertoire and Creative. Participants will learn how to perform some of the company's repertoire and gain an insight into the layered choreographic and artistic process of Little Red or Green in Blue.

Two Company dancers will take participants through a warm-up, preparing the body to dance and move on to a mixed ability level technique class before teaching sections from the Little Red or Green in Blue*.

Throughout the day all participants will gain an understanding of the movement vocabulary used to describe Oguike's work and style of dancing as well as an insight into how to execute choreographic and performance skills.

Repertoire workshop - Little Red: The workshop focuses on technique, insight into contemporary dance and Little Red' repertoire. The workshop will highlight composer Antonio Vivaldi and centre on the design, rhythm, form and structure of Little Red. Participants will learn sections from the piece, explore dynamics of the dance, gain insight into how Oguike relates music and dance, explore the use of male and female dancers in the piece and gain an insight into costume, lighting, music and the use of props on stage.

Creative Workshop - Green in Blue: The workshop focuses on creativity, improvisation and choreographic devices. Participants will be able to develop improvisational skills and explore of Oguike's points technique; learn how to create movement sequences and how to make them into a piece; gain insight into how Oguike relates music and dance; focus on relationships between the musicians and dancers on stage and understand use if space on stage.

Taking part in Henri Oguike Dance Company's Education Programme is a chance to dance inside some of the most intriguing and elegant passages in British Contemporary dance.
